About the Tumbuka language.
Tumbuka (chiTumbuka) is the main language of northern Malawi, including Mzuzu and the Rumphi and Mzimba districts, and is also spoken in eastern Zambia. It is a Bantu language written in the Latin alphabet.
In northern Malawi Tumbuka is often used where Chichewa is used in the centre and south. The two are related but are different languages, so we use a Tumbuka translator for Tumbuka readers. Chichewa has its own page.
Malawi's official documents are issued in English. Tumbuka work is usually community and church material, health and education information, personal letters and statements, and interpreting.
We translate in both directions, including Tumbuka letters and affidavits into English for use in South Africa. Malawian names are often spelled in more than one way, so we keep them consistent with the passport or other documents you supply. A certified translation is available for these. If an authority asks for a sworn translation, ask us to confirm availability for the language pair.
