About the Oromo language.
Oromo (Afaan Oromoo) is the most widely spoken first language in Ethiopia. It is the language of the Oromia region, which surrounds Addis Ababa, and is also spoken in northern Kenya. It is a Cushitic language, related to Somali and Afar.
Oromo is written in the Latin alphabet, called Qubee, which has been the standard since the early 1990s. It is not written in the Ge'ez script used for Amharic. Borana, a variety spoken in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya, has its own page.
Many Ethiopian federal documents are issued in Amharic, while documents from the Oromia regional government and courts are often in Oromo. We check the language of each document before quoting, and we translate Amharic documents too.
We translate in both directions. Common documents include birth and marriage certificates, identity documents, school records and statements for immigration and asylum cases. A certified translation is available for these. If an authority asks for a sworn translation, ask us to confirm availability for the language pair.
