The Department of Home Affairs registers deaths and issues death certificates in South Africa. Its death-certificate application form distinguishes a few formats, and the differences matter when a receiving authority asks for a particular one.
A computer-printed death certificate is the standard printed certificate. An unabridged death certificate sets out fuller particulars and, on the Home Affairs form, is described as mainly issued for overseas use. A certified copy of the death register is a copy of the register entry itself.

A South African death certificate is commonly needed overseas for estate administration, foreign pension or insurance claims, closing bank accounts, property matters, citizenship or family-status proceedings, and foreign civil registration.
Translation and legalisation are separate steps. A translation renders the certificate in the language the authority requires; an Apostille or authentication speaks to the official origin of the document. Depending on the country, an estate process may need the certificate translated, legalised, or both.

A foreign death certificate may be submitted for a South African immigration application, an estate being wound up here, a marital-status matter, a court or legal procedure, or a Home Affairs-related process where applicable.
For immigration specifically, a late spouse’s death certificate is one of the documents Home Affairs identifies for widowed applicants. Where a foreign certificate is not in a language accepted for the procedure, it needs translation, and the procedure may require it to be certified as correct by a sworn translator.

When a death is reported in South Africa, the registration process produces more than one document. There is a notification or report of death, and a burial order, and then, once the death is registered, Home Affairs issues the death certificate.
The notification of death and the burial order are not the same document as the final death certificate, and a receiving authority almost always wants the death certificate itself. Clients sometimes send a notification of death for translation by mistake, which delays the process. If you are unsure which document you are holding, send a clear copy and we will confirm before quoting.

Where a foreign national has died in South Africa, South African consular guidance notes that the death can be registered manually with Home Affairs and a handwritten death certificate may be issued.
