The Department of Home Affairs is the authority that registers marriages and issues marriage certificates in South Africa, and copies and unabridged marriage certificates can be obtained from Home Affairs where required.

Which South African marriage certificate can be Apostilled?
This is where marriage certificates differ from many other documents. DIRCO’s legalisation guidance indicates that the marriage certificate handed over by the marriage officer on the day is not the document accepted for legalisation, and that the original unabridged marriage certificate obtained from the Department of Home Affairs is the one required.
If your document is going overseas and legalisation is involved, check which certificate you are holding before starting, and confirm the current requirement directly with DIRCO and with the authority that will receive the translation. DIRCO indicates that original South African birth, marriage and death certificates may be legalised for use abroad when the applicable requirements are met, and that the receiving authority in the destination country determines what documentation it requires.
