South African marriage records are commonly described as abridged or unabridged. An abridged certificate carries limited particulars, while an unabridged certificate sets out fuller information about the marriage and the spouses.
The Department of Home Affairs is the authority that registers marriages and issues marriage certificates in South Africa, and copies and unabridged marriage certificates can be obtained from Home Affairs where required.

South African law recognises more than one kind of marriage, and the resulting document can differ.
A civil marriage is entered into under the Marriage Act before a marriage officer, and Home Affairs issues a marriage certificate for it. A customary marriage is concluded under customary law and is registered with the Department of Home Affairs, which then issues a certificate reflecting that registration. A civil union is entered into under the Civil Union Act, and a civil union certificate is issued.

Which South African marriage certificate can be Apostilled?
This is where marriage certificates differ from many other documents. DIRCO’s legalisation guidance indicates that the marriage certificate handed over by the marriage officer on the day is not the document accepted for legalisation, and that the original unabridged marriage certificate obtained from the Department of Home Affairs is the one required.
