South African birth records may be described as abridged, unabridged, full, or as a birth certificate containing parental details, depending on when the document was issued and the context in which the term is being used.
Home Affairs moved away from issuing abridged certificates to newborns in 2013 and began issuing unabridged certificates containing additional information, including parental details. Government later approved the use of the term “birth certificate containing parental details” in place of “unabridged birth certificate” in relevant travel documentation.

What is included in a birth certificate translation?
The translation reflects the information appearing on the source certificate so that the receiving authority can compare the translated document with the original. Where present and legible, this may include:
