South African government guidance on converting a foreign driving licence states that the licence must be translated into an official South African language if necessary. A translation letter from a competent authority is required where the foreign licence is not in one of the official languages.
So, in practice: if your foreign driver’s licence is not in a South African official language, the licensing authority may require a translation as part of the conversion process. Send us the licence and any written instruction you have received, and we will prepare the translation to match.

Licence validity or confirmation letter
Confirms, through the issuing authority, that the licence is valid, has not been cancelled or suspended, and identifies the vehicle categories the holder may drive.
South African government guidance specifically requires confirmation from the driving-licence issuing authority stating that the licence is valid, has not been cancelled or suspended, and identifying the relevant vehicle categories when a licence is being converted. That confirmation is a separate document from the licence, and it too may need translation.
What information is translated?
The translation reflects the visible information on the licence or letter supplied. Depending on the document, this may include:

Vehicle category codes are translated or described faithfully, not automatically converted into South African licence codes, unless the issuing or receiving authority provides an official equivalence.

Foreign licences describe what a person may drive in different ways: letters, numeric categories, and named classes for motorcycles, passenger vehicles, heavy vehicles, trailers and commercial vehicles, along with restrictions.
Premium Lingua preserves the source meaning carefully and, where useful, explains what a category covers. The translator does not decide that a foreign category equals a particular South African driving code. That decision belongs to the licensing authority handling the conversion.
Using a foreign licence in South Africa.
Guidance for foreign representatives notes that a foreign licence may be used subject to conditions, including that it is valid and either issued in an official South African language or accompanied by an authenticity or validity certificate in English, or an appropriate translation.
South African mission guidance abroad also tells holders of licences in other languages to obtain a translation from an independent sworn translator. These points are tied to particular authorities and circumstances, and are not a single universal rule for every visitor, so confirm what applies to your situation with the relevant authority.

The official conversion guidance lists, among its requirements:
- A valid foreign driving licence
- Acceptable identification
- Permanent-residence evidence where applicable
- A translation letter if the licence is not in an official South African language
- Confirmation from the licence issuing authority
- The relevant vehicle-category information

South African driver’s licence confirmation letters for use abroad.
DIRCO’s Legalisation Section does not legalise the actual South African driver’s licence card. Instead, it accepts original driver’s licence confirmation letters issued, signed and stamped by the Department of Transport or the RTMC, confirming that the person holds a valid licence.
So someone living overseas usually needs an official confirmation letter, rather than trying to legalise the licence card itself. DIRCO guidance notes that the RTMC can issue such a letter where a valid South African licence can be verified, and that the letter can assist with converting to a foreign licence in the person’s country of residence.

DIRCO does not legalise the licence card itself.
The RTMC confirmation letter
An original signed and stamped licence confirmation letter may be submitted through the appropriate legalisation process.
Translation is a separate step again: if the destination authority needs the information in another language, the licence or the confirmation letter is translated in addition to any legalisation. Confirm the order of steps with that authority.
Driver’s licence translation vs International Driving Permit.
An International Driving Permit and a translation are not automatically interchangeable. They serve related but different purposes, and an authority that wants one will not always accept the other.
South African conversion guidance states that where an IDP is submitted, the underlying driving licence on which the IDP was issued must also be submitted. Whether you need an IDP, a translation, or both, is a question for the relevant licensing or destination authority, not something Premium Lingua advises on.
