About the language

About the Xhosa language.

isiXhosa is the second most widely spoken home language in South Africa. According to Statistics South Africa's most recent census data, approximately 8.2 million South Africans speak isiXhosa as their first language — just over 16% of the population. When second-language speakers are included, the total number of Xhosa speakers across South Africa and neighbouring countries exceeds 19 million people.

isiXhosa is the dominant language of the Eastern Cape, one of South Africa's most populous provinces, and has a significant presence in the Western Cape, particularly in Cape Town and surrounding areas. It is also widely spoken in Gauteng, where large Xhosa-speaking communities have established deep roots in urban centres.

isiXhosa belongs to the Nguni branch of the Bantu language family, closely related to isiZulu, siSwati, and isiNdebele. It is one of South Africa's 12 official languages and holds particular cultural and political significance as the language associated with many of the country's most prominent historical figures, including Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, both of whom were native Xhosa speakers.

Features & context.

One of isiXhosa's most distinctive features is its extensive use of click consonants — the dental, lateral, and palatal clicks — borrowed historically from neighbouring Khoisan languages. Each can be combined with other consonants to produce a wide variety of sounds, making isiXhosa one of the more technically demanding languages to translate and interpret accurately.

The Eastern Cape, where isiXhosa is most concentrated, has a rich history of political activism, cultural heritage, and community resilience. It is also home to significant agricultural, manufacturing, and automotive industries. The Western Cape's Xhosa-speaking communities are largely concentrated in Cape Town's townships and surrounding areas — a major urban consumer and civic audience.

The script. Written in the Latin alphabet with a well-developed literary tradition. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw a flourishing of isiXhosa literature, journalism, and poetry — figures such as Nontsizi Mgqwetho and SEK Mqhayi made significant contributions to the Xhosa literary canon. isiXhosa is tonal with a complex noun class system and agglutinative grammar; accurate translation requires trained native speakers with a strong command of formal written registers, which differ considerably from everyday spoken Xhosa.

Certified

Certified Xhosa translation.

Certified translation into and from isiXhosa is required in a wide range of official contexts in South Africa — applications to the Department of Home Affairs, court proceedings, academic credential verification, and compliance with various government and regulatory requirements. Our certified isiXhosa translations are produced by qualified, experienced native-speaking linguists and meet the standards expected by South African courts, government departments, universities, and professional bodies.

Legal

Xhosa legal translation.

South Africa's Constitution enshrines the right to use one's language in legal proceedings. For isiXhosa speakers, this means that accurate, legally precise translation is a right, not a privilege. Courts in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape frequently require Xhosa translation and interpreting services, and the accuracy of legal translations in these contexts carries significant consequences. Our Xhosa legal translators have specialist knowledge of South African legal terminology, court document conventions, and the specific requirements of legal translation in the South African context.

  • Contracts, agreements, and commercial negotiations
  • Court pleadings, motions, and legal filings
  • Patent applications and intellectual property documentation
  • Legal correspondence including letters and formal emails
  • Expert witness statements and legal opinions
  • Regulatory filings and compliance documentation
Business

Xhosa business document translation.

The Eastern Cape is home to significant industrial activity, including one of South Africa's major automotive manufacturing hubs centred around Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). The province also has substantial agricultural, textile, and logistics sectors. Cape Town, where a large Xhosa-speaking community resides, is South Africa's second largest city and a major hub for finance, tourism, technology, and trade. Businesses that communicate with Xhosa-speaking employees, customers, and communities in isiXhosa demonstrate cultural respect, improve internal compliance, and build more effective relationships with one of South Africa's largest language communities.

  • Marketing materials including brochures, adverts, and promotional content
  • Financial reports, balance sheets, and income statements
  • Company policies, employment equity plans, and internal guidelines
  • Business contracts and commercial agreements
  • Business correspondence including emails and formal letters
  • Product catalogues, technical specifications, and datasheets
  • Human resources documents including job descriptions, employment contracts, and employee handbooks
Industries we serve

Specialists across your sector.

Our Xhosa translation specialists bring experience across a range of sectors.

Government & Public Sector

Eastern Cape and Western Cape provincial governments communicate regularly in isiXhosa. National departments serving these provinces require Xhosa translation for public notices, service delivery communications, policy documents, and community engagement materials.

Healthcare

The Eastern Cape faces significant public health challenges, and effective health communication in isiXhosa is critical. Patient consent forms, clinical trial documentation, community health campaigns, and medical instructions must be accurately translated to serve Xhosa-speaking patients with the care and dignity they deserve.

§

Legal & Justice

Law firms, legal aid organisations, the South African Police Service, and the courts in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape all require professional Xhosa translation and interpreting on a regular basis.

Aa

Education

Mother-tongue education policy in South Africa increasingly supports instruction in home languages during the foundation phase. Demand for educational materials, assessments, and e-learning content in isiXhosa is growing, particularly in the Eastern Cape where the language is most prevalent.

Automotive & Manufacturing

The Eastern Cape's automotive sector, including major manufacturers in Gqeberha, employs a large Xhosa-speaking workforce. Workplace safety documentation, training materials, HR policies, and operational manuals require accurate isiXhosa translation to meet both legal and practical communication needs.

Retail & Consumer Goods

Retailers and consumer brands operating in the Eastern Cape and Cape Town metro area benefit significantly from marketing and customer communication that speaks directly to Xhosa-speaking consumers in their home language.

Tourism & Heritage

The Eastern Cape is one of South Africa's most historically significant tourist destinations — the Transkei and Ciskei heritage regions, the Wild Coast, and numerous sites associated with the anti-apartheid struggle. Heritage tourism, travel companies, and hospitality businesses benefit from accurate isiXhosa translation for guides, visitor materials, and cultural interpretation.

Media & Broadcasting

The SABC and other South African broadcasters are required to produce content in official languages including isiXhosa. Subtitling, transcription, and voice-over services support compliance and help media organisations reach Xhosa-speaking audiences authentically.

With over 8 million home speakers concentrated primarily in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape, isiXhosa represents one of the most commercially and civically significant language markets in South Africa. The Eastern Cape has a population of approximately 6.7 million people, the majority of whom speak isiXhosa as their first language. Cape Town's Xhosa-speaking community adds further scale, with significant numbers in areas such as Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, and Langa. Beyond South Africa, isiXhosa is also spoken in Lesotho and Zimbabwe, and by diaspora communities in various parts of the world.
