About the language

About the Dutch language.

Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands and one of three official languages of Belgium, where it is known as Flemish Dutch or simply Vlaams in the Flemish region. With approximately 24 million native speakers and a further 5 million second-language speakers, Dutch is spoken across the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, and the Caribbean territories of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, all of which form part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is one of the world's most open and internationally connected economies. It is home to the Port of Rotterdam, the largest seaport in Europe and one of the busiest in the world, making it a critical gateway for global trade. The Netherlands consistently ranks among the top countries in the world for exports, foreign direct investment, and ease of doing business. Dutch multinational companies including Shell, Philips, ASML, Heineken, ING, and Unilever have a global footprint that extends to South Africa and across the African continent. Belgium, where Dutch is spoken by the approximately 6.5 million inhabitants of the Flemish region, is home to the headquarters of the European Union and NATO.

Dutch belongs to the West Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family, making it closely related to both German and English. In terms of vocabulary and grammatical structure, Dutch sits between the two, sharing significant lexical overlap with English while retaining grammatical features more characteristic of German — grammatical gender, case inflection in certain pronouns, and a tendency toward compound word formation. The language uses the Latin alphabet without diacritical marks, with the exception of the digraph ij, which is treated as a single character in Dutch orthography and alphabetisation.

Features & context.

The distinction between Dutch as used in the Netherlands and Dutch as used in the Flemish region of Belgium is worth noting for translation purposes. While the written standard is largely shared, there are meaningful differences in vocabulary, idiom, and register. Flemish Dutch tends toward more formal registers in professional communication and uses a number of terms and expressions that differ from their Netherlands equivalents. For localisation projects, marketing content, and consumer-facing materials, these differences matter and should be handled by a linguist familiar with the specific target variety.

The Netherlands has a strong tradition of international trade, diplomacy, and multilingualism. Dutch professionals are among the most proficient English speakers in the world, but this does not reduce the importance of professional Dutch translation. Legal documents, regulatory filings, official correspondence, consumer communications, and technical materials are produced and required in Dutch, and the expectation of linguistic precision in professional and legal contexts is high.

Dutch carries a particular historical resonance for South African language professionals. Afrikaans evolved directly from the Dutch dialects brought to the Cape Colony by settlers from the Netherlands in the 17th century, and the two languages retain a meaningful degree of mutual intelligibility. This does not mean Dutch and Afrikaans are interchangeable for translation purposes — they are distinct languages with different vocabularies, grammar, and registers, and a native Afrikaans speaker is not automatically qualified to translate Dutch. But the historical relationship is relevant context for South African businesses engaging with Dutch partners, and our team is well positioned to advise on the linguistic nuances that arise.

The script. Written in the Latin alphabet without diacritical marks. The digraph ij is treated as a single character in Dutch orthography and alphabetisation, and the spelling system is relatively straightforward — pronunciation is generally predictable from written form, unlike English.

Dutch legal translation.

The Netherlands has one of the most developed legal and regulatory systems in the world. Dutch law is based on the civil law tradition, with significant influence from French and German legal systems, and has been substantially harmonised with European Union law. The Dutch legal system is known for its precision, procedural thoroughness, and strong protection of commercial and property rights. Dutch legal documents are characterised by formal register, complex sentence structure, and precise use of terminology — accurate legal translation is essential for protecting rights, ensuring enforceability, and avoiding misunderstanding.

Industries we serve

Specialists across your sector.

Our Dutch translation specialists bring experience across a range of sectors.

Agriculture & Food

The Netherlands is the world's second largest exporter of agricultural products by value, after the United States — a remarkable achievement for a country of its size. Dutch agricultural exports include flowers and flower bulbs, vegetables, dairy products, and meat. South African agricultural businesses engaging with Dutch suppliers, buyers, or technology providers require accurate Dutch translation for contracts, technical standards, and trade documentation.

Water Management & Engineering

The Netherlands is the world's leading authority on water management, flood protection, and hydraulic engineering. Dutch engineering firms and knowledge institutions are active in South Africa and across the African continent on water infrastructure projects. Technical and commercial translation between Dutch and English is a regular requirement in this sector.

Technology & Innovation

The Netherlands is home to ASML, the world's sole manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet lithography machines critical to global semiconductor production. The broader Dutch technology sector — semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, agricultural technology, energy infrastructure — generates significant demand for specialist technical translation: patents, equipment manuals, engineering process documentation, consumer product documentation, and R&D reports.

Automotive & Logistics

The Netherlands and Belgium are both significant markets for the European automotive industry, with several major automotive and transport-technology companies headquartered locally. The Port of Rotterdam and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport make the Netherlands one of the world's most important logistics hubs — Dutch logistics companies operating in Africa, including South Africa, require consistent translation of operational, commercial, and compliance documentation, plus automotive technical docs, engineering specs, marketing materials, packaging, and training content.

Legal & Professional Services

Dutch law firms, notaries, and professional services firms engaged in cross-border transactions with South African counterparties require reliable Dutch legal and financial translation.

Tourism & Hospitality

South Africa is a popular destination for Dutch tourists, and the Netherlands attracts a steady flow of South African visitors. Tourism operators, hospitality businesses, and destination marketing organisations in both countries benefit from professionally translated content in Dutch and English.

With approximately 29 million speakers across the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, and the Caribbean, Dutch represents a concentrated but commercially significant language market. The combined economic output of the Netherlands and Flanders alone places the Dutch-speaking world among the most prosperous and internationally engaged language communities on the planet. The Netherlands consistently ranks among the world's top trading nations, and Dutch businesses are active investors and partners across sub-Saharan Africa, including in South Africa. For South African companies seeking European market entry or partnerships, the Netherlands and Belgium offer sophisticated, well-regulated markets with strong rule of law and a culture of international commercial engagement.
