About the language

About the Afrikaans language.

Afrikaans is one of South Africa's 12 official languages and one of the most widely spoken languages in the country. According to Statistics South Africa's most recent census data, approximately 6.2 million South Africans speak Afrikaans as their first language, representing around 13.5% of the population. When second-language speakers are included, the total number of Afrikaans speakers in South Africa alone exceeds 16 million people.

Afrikaans is also an official language of Namibia, where it serves as the most widely spoken lingua franca across ethnic and language groups, and it has speaker communities in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and among the South African diaspora worldwide.

Afrikaans is a West Germanic language that evolved primarily from 17th-century Dutch dialects brought to the Cape Colony by settlers from the Netherlands, most notably from the South Holland region. Over the following two centuries, it developed into a distinct language through contact with Malay, Portuguese, Khoisan languages, Bantu languages, and German, absorbing vocabulary, phonological features, and grammatical influences from each. The language was historically referred to as Cape Dutch or Kitchen Dutch before being formally recognised as a separate language in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Features & context.

Approximately 90 to 95% of Afrikaans vocabulary traces back to Dutch, and the two languages remain mutually intelligible to a significant degree. However, Afrikaans has its own distinct grammar, orthography, and vocabulary that set it clearly apart. It has a simpler verb conjugation system than Dutch, a unique set of idioms and expressions, and a vocabulary enriched by borrowings from numerous other language traditions.

Afrikaans is spoken across a wide geographic and demographic range in South Africa. It is the dominant language of the Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces, and has strong speaker communities in the Eastern Cape, Free State, and Gauteng. The Afrikaans-speaking community in South Africa is diverse, spanning different cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, which means that register, tone, and cultural context are important considerations in any translation project.

The script. Written in the Latin alphabet with diacritics on borrowed words. Afrikaans has a rich literary tradition, a strong presence in South African media and broadcasting, and a significant body of legal, academic, and technical writing. It is one of the languages of instruction in many South African schools and universities, and continues to evolve as a living language with a growing digital and online presence.

Legal

Afrikaans legal translation.

Afrikaans has a long and deeply established presence in the South African legal system. Many of South Africa's foundational legal documents, statutes, and court records were drafted in Afrikaans, and the language continues to be used extensively in legal practice, particularly in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and Free State. Legal translation into and from Afrikaans requires specialist knowledge of South African legal terminology, the conventions of legal drafting in Afrikaans, and the specific requirements of the relevant legal context.

  • Contracts, agreements, and commercial negotiations
  • Court pleadings, motions, and legal filings
  • Patent applications and intellectual property documentation
  • Legal correspondence including letters and formal emails
  • Expert witness statements and legal opinions
  • Regulatory filings and licence applications
  • Notarial documents and sworn translations
Business

Afrikaans business document translation.

The Western Cape is one of South Africa's most economically dynamic provinces, with a strong agricultural sector, a growing technology and innovation industry, significant manufacturing activity, and one of the continent's premier tourism destinations. The Northern Cape, while more sparsely populated, plays an important role in South Africa's mining sector. Namibia, where Afrikaans functions as a widely used business language, offers additional market opportunities. Communicating with Afrikaans-speaking employees, clients, and stakeholders in their home language builds trust, improves clarity, and reflects a genuine respect for the communities you serve.

§

Legal & Professional Services

Afrikaans remains one of the primary working languages of the legal profession in the Western Cape and surrounding regions. Law firms, notaries, conveyancers, and corporate legal departments regularly require Afrikaans translation and drafting support.

Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals

The Western Cape and Northern Cape have large Afrikaans-speaking patient populations. Accurate Afrikaans medical translation is essential for informed consent, patient safety, and effective public health communication — clinical trials, medical device instructions, consent forms, and pharmaceutical inserts.

Government & Public Sector

South Africa's constitutional requirement to use official languages in government communication means Afrikaans translation is regularly needed for legislation, municipal communications, public notices, and service delivery materials in Afrikaans-speaking communities.

Agriculture

The Western Cape and Northern Cape are home to South Africa's most productive agricultural regions — the Cape Winelands, the Boland, and the fruit-producing Hex River Valley and Elgin. Agricultural businesses, farming cooperatives, and agribusiness companies frequently require Afrikaans translation for contracts, technical documentation, and regulatory compliance.

Aa

Education

Afrikaans is a language of instruction at several South African universities, including Stellenbosch University, and at numerous schools across the country. Educational publishers, e-learning developers, and assessment organisations require accurate Afrikaans translation for learning materials, examination papers, and instructional content.

Media & Publishing

Afrikaans has a vibrant media sector, including newspapers such as Die Burger and Rapport, television channels, radio stations, and a growing online content industry. Subtitling, transcription, and content translation services support this sector's output.

Tourism & Hospitality

The Western Cape is one of South Africa's most visited tourist destinations, attracting both domestic and international visitors. Tourism operators, wine estates, heritage sites, and hospitality businesses benefit from accurate Afrikaans translation for guest-facing materials, signage, and marketing content.

Financial Services

South Africa's financial services sector — banks, insurers, and investment managers — serves a large Afrikaans-speaking client base. Clear, accurate Afrikaans translation of product information, terms and conditions, and client communications is essential for compliance and client trust.

With over 16 million speakers in South Africa alone, and additional communities in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and the South African diaspora, Afrikaans represents one of the most commercially significant language markets in southern Africa. The Western Cape, where Afrikaans is the most spoken home language, is also one of South Africa's wealthiest provinces by per capita income and one of its most economically diverse. The Afrikaans-speaking market spans urban professionals, rural farming communities, suburban families, and coastal tourism economies, making it a broad and commercially valuable audience for businesses across many sectors. Afrikaans also holds a unique position in Namibia — while not an official government language there, it remains the most widely spoken lingua franca, used across communities of different ethnic backgrounds for everyday communication, business, and trade.
