About Sesotho
Sesotho, also known as Southern Sotho, is a Bantu language spoken by approximately 5 million people across Lesotho, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia. It holds official language status in both Lesotho and South Africa, playing a key role in government, education, and daily life alongside English.
The language has a deep cultural and historical significance. The first Sesotho grammar was published in 1841, and the Bible was translated into the dialect of King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of Lesotho. In 1863, the first Sesotho newspaper, Leselinyana la Basotho (“The Small Light of the Basotho”), was established—marking a major step in literary development.
Linguistically, Sesotho is known for its complex structure, featuring nine vowels, 35 consonants, and three click sounds. It is a tonal language, meaning pitch and tone can alter word meanings. Its vocabulary is deeply rooted in Basotho culture, with rich terminology related to family, nature, and particularly cattle, which are viewed as sacred and symbolize wealth.
