Czech language profile

The Czech language, known as čeština in its native form, is a West Slavic language that is spoken by over 10 million people in the Czech Republic, and several more million worldwide as a second language. It is closely related to Slovak, Polish, and Sorbian, and shares a degree of mutual intelligibility with them, particularly Slovak.

Czech has a Latin-based alphabet enhanced with diacritics, which signifies the phonemic distinctions in the language. It is a highly inflected language, much like other Slavic languages, and uses a complex system of declensions for its nouns and adjectives, with seven grammatical cases.

Vocabulary wise, Czech has been influenced over the years by Latin, German, French, and English, though efforts have been made to preserve its Slavic roots. The language is also known for its distinctive phonetic features, such as a high number of consonant clusters and the presence of the ř sound, a raised alveolar non-sonorant trill, which is considered unique to Czech.

The Czech language has two standard forms, one for written and formal communication, known as Standard Czech, and a more colloquial form used in everyday speech, known as Common Czech. The latter varies regionally, giving rise to a variety of dialects across the country.

Czech is an important language for commerce and cultural exchange in Central Europe. Knowledge of the Czech language can be a valuable asset in fields such as international business, academia, diplomacy, and tourism.
